retirement: Kolkata: Mumbai Indians lifted the Indian Premier League title for the first time with a 23-run victory over a hapless Chennai Super Kings in the final, played in the shadow of the raging spot fixing scam amid reports that some more players could be arrested after the Eden Gardens game Sunday. The Mumbai Indians successfully defended a modest 148/9, to hold an error-prone Chennai batsmen to 125/9 and extract sweet revenge for their 22-run defeat to the same rivals in a summit clash three years back. For Chennai, skipper M.S. Dhoni ploughed a lonely furrow (63 not out; 45 b 3x4 5x6), as he joined in the middle with half the side gone and only 36 on the board into the seventh over. Dhoni began by playing cautiously, but hit three sixes in an attempt to turn the game, but in the end that was not enough. The one-sided game, played before packed galleries at the iconic venue, saw the Chennai Super Kings batsmen mostly go out to poor shots, though opener Mike Hussey was unlucky to be at the wrong end of a beautiful yorker length delivery from Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga that swung back into the Australian. Once Hussey got out, the floodgates were opened, and Malinga was on a hat-trick by claiming new man Suresh Raina with the next ball. The Kings' woes continued, as S. Badrinath needlessly edged an offering wide outside the off stump from Mitchell Johnson. Inside two overs, Chennai were 3/3. Opener Murali Vijay, seeing the procession from the other end, tried to rectify the damage in the company of Dwayne Bravo, but the Trinidadian departed after picking up some boundaries with lofted strokes. Ravindra Jadeja fell to another soft dismissal without bothering the scorer, reducing Chennai to 36/5 in the seventh over. Vijay (18), who earlier got a "life" when he was dropped on 14, went back in the very next over, worsening Chennai's position. Earlier, backed by a spirited bowling and electric fielding, Chennai Super Kings restricted Mumbai Indians to a gettable total. However, thanks to a quickfire unbeaten 60 from Kieron Pollard (32b 7x4 3x6), Mumbai recovered from a disastrous start to reach a position of respectability after opting to bat first. Apart from Pollard's blitzkrieg, only Ambati Rayudu (37) and Dinesh Karthick (21) made useful contributions. For Chennai, Dwayne Bravo (4/44) was the most successful bowler followed by Albie Morkel (2/12). The big match did not have exactly the sort of build up that one would have expected it to have. The raging spot fixing scam seemed to have pushed into the background the
with the team," Tendulkar added. "We have to be realistic about it. I've played six seasons with the Mumbai Indians and I have completely enjoyed it. This was the best season for Mumbai Indians. Before this 2010 was the best season," he said. "This is the perfect time to say thank you to my supporters and well-wishers. I cannot wait to lift the IPL trophy," he added. The sixth edition of the IPL was also the last for Rahul Dravid and Australian legend Adam Gilchrist. Source: Article. Mumbai Indians pip Royals to reach IPL final, Kolkata: Mumbai Indians overcame middle over hiccups to carve out a thrilling four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals off the penultimate ball to move into the Indian Premier League final here on Friday. Mumbai, who reached 169/6 in reply to 165/6 posted by the Royals in the play-off at the Eden Gardens, have made it to the summit round for only the second time in the cash-rich league, and would take on two time champions Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. The two sides had clashed in the 2010 final, which Chennai won by 22 runs. The riveting match that went to the wires saw the star-studded Mumbai cruising at 125/1 in 14 overs - with only 41 needed from 36 balls - when they suddenly seemed to lose their way as wickets tumbled in quick succession. With the 18th over gone, the Mumbai Indians needed a challenging 23 from 12 balls, but Ambati Rayudu (17; 11b 1x4 1x6) plundered 15 runs off Kevon Cooper to ease the pressure, before Harbhajan Singh finished it off with a boundary off the penultimate delivery to carry the Mumbai Indians through. Big hitting Barbados opener Dwayne Smith (62; 44b, 6x4 2x6) had earlier spearheaded the Mumbai Indians charge, as he demolished the Royals attack by executing some audacious strokes. Smith and Aditya Tare (35; 27 b, 3x4, 2x6) had given a rollicking start to Mumbai with a stand of 55-ball 70. After Tare fell, Smith and Dinesh Karthik (22; 17 b 3x4) plundered another 55 from only 30 balls. But the script saw a dramatic change soon after, as Karthik, skipper Rohit Sharma, Smith and Kieron Pollard fell in quick succession. But thanks to Rayudu's lusty hittings, Mumbai managed to have the last laugh. Earlier, led by an unbeaten cameo from keeper-willower Dishant Yagnik, Royals rode on a late batting surge to post a good total. The unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 57 in only 27 balls by Yagnik (31; 17b 5x4) and Brad Hodge (19; 20b 2x4) allowed the Royals to gallop to a sizeable total after they were put on the backfoot by the Mumbai bowlers who claimed wickets at regular intervals. Opting to bat first Royals made a steady as skipper Rahul Dravid played some fluent shots to top score for his side with a 37-ball 43 studded with seven fours. Faced with some incisive bowling by Mumbai led by spinner Harbhajan Singh, Royals kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be at 110/6 in the 16thover. As getting restricted to an underpar score loomed large, Rajasthan's last match hero Hodge and Yagnik came to the party scoring 55 runs in the last 4 overs to achieve a handsome total. Stuart Binny 27 (17b 3x4 1x6), and Ajinkya Rahane 21 (18b 3x4) were the other contributors for Rajasthan. Bowling the last over speedster Lasith Malinga conceded 18 runs including two extremely wide deliveries. Harbhajan 3/23 and Kieron Pollard 2/6 were the most successful bowlers for the Mumbai outfit. Source: Article, IPL spot-fixing: Meiyappan arrested by Mumbai Police, Mumbai police late on Friday night arrested Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Indian cricket board chief N. Srinivasan, in the IPL spot fixing scam after three hours of intense interrogation, an official said. Questioned at the office of the Crime Branch, Meiyappan was confronted with the evidence against him and arrested around midnight. His name cropped up in the scam during revelations by Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh Randhawa, currently in police custody. Confirming the arrest, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, who is spear-heading the investigation, said there was evidence of Meiyappan's involvement in the scam. Meiyappan's lawyer PS Raman said, "We are exploring all legal possibilities, we will have to wait for the remand report to know what are the charges." Meiyappan who flew in from Madurai by a chartered aircraft was met at the airport by a team of Crime Branch sleuths, who drove off to the Crime Branch office in Mumbai Police Headquarters near Crawford in south Mumbai. He had rushed here following summons by the Mumbai police stuck on his residence door and delivered to his office in Chennai Thursday. He was given time till 5 p.m. Friday to respond to the police summons. Earlier Friday, he reportedly sought time till Monday to report to Mumbai police but his plea was rejected, compelling him to fly in here. Source: Article, Chennai beat Mumbai, enter final, Fans have remained loyal, at least in least. That seems to be the guarantee that keeps Indian cricket flush with hope and funds, despite the negativity threatening it. The crowd at the Ferozeshah Kotla, packed to the rafters on Tuesday, showed that. The spot-fixing allegations looming large, a cash-strapped franchise pulling out of the league and Sachin Tendulkar not playing didn't curb their enthusiasm. Perhaps there is enough to look up to. A sea of yellow flags fluttering in response to the exquisite and innovative shots played by Michael Hussey showed where the support of the crowd lay - with MS Dhoni who walked out triumphant leading his team to the final with a 48-run win. CSK, brilliant chasers, elected to bat. MI's Munaf Patel returned to the side after a month-long absence. In the end, he was more a liability on a wicket where his line and length was expected to be the key. The Kotla track has played inconsistently this season. If the track has runs, there is nothing that can be done. Mitchell Johnson found that out early. There was no breeze and the season's dry heat almost blunted the deadliest paceman this season. Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina could play as they liked. It was a massacre. Only Harbhajan Singh walked away with decent figures. It was too much for Rohit Sharma. He was furious, especially once at Munaf. Short of ideas to stop Hussey, he changed six bowlers in the first eight overs. However, Dwayne Smith provided him and MI hope, flying Mumbai to 80-odd in the first eight overs. But a few wickets tilted the balance. And no prizes for guessing who plucked the big hitters -- Smith, Pollard and Karthik all fell to ‘Sir’ Ravindra Jadeja. Source: Hindustan Times, IPL spot-fixing shameful: Ranbir Kapoor: Asserting that he was a football fan, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor on Thursday expressed dismay at the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot fixing scam, saying "it's shameful" and blots the entire platform. "I think it's such an entertaining platform... the entire country loves it... the entire world loves it, and there are many players who are passionately and seriously playing the sport. Because of such culprits and mischief makers, their names are also tainted," Kapoor told media persons while promoting his forthcoming release "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" here. Three Rajasthan Royal players, including India's former Test and ODI bowler Sreesanth, have been arrested in Mumbai by Delhi Police in connection with spot fixing. Later, Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh Randhawa, a bookie and a hawala operator were also arrested by the Mumbai police in the scam that was busted May 16. "I have no idea...I also read from the newspapers... I have nothing to say about that. it's not about Bollywood, it's about a human being. It's shameful...," said Kapoor. Source: Image, Article, Rajasthan Royals’ man of steel "Brad Hodge", Excitement, thrill and at the end of it, euphoria took centre stage when Rajasthan Royals’ Brad Hodge whacked Darren Sammy’s second ball of the last over for a six. The result; Rajasthan Royals booked a place in the Champions League T20 and more importantly got a step closer to the final of the IPL. (Also Read: RR vs SRH - Eliminator Report & Stats: IPL 2013) The man of the moment, the man at the centre of all the action to take RR to a thrilling victory, was Brad Hodge, a T20 veteran of sorts with 5548 runs in the shortest format of the game; the most by any batsman. It was a night when Hodge’s year’s of experience in this format was put to test and how well the Australian succeeded. “It was a close contest and that is exactly where you need your experience to get a team over the line,” said Hodge, visibly excited with a broad smile on his face as he was up for a chat with IPLT20.com. “This is the most thrilling game I have ever played in the IPL. I have played for KKR and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the past editions. This is the first time with RR and I am delighted to win the game for the team. “We are just a step away from the all important final,” exclaimed the Australian. When RR won the game, there was emotions galore in the dug-out. There was fist pumping in the air by the players and the support stuff even as the players ran to the centre of the pitch to give their hero of the day a pat on the back for keeping his cool and holding his nerve in such a tight contest. Not surprisingly, RR captain Rahul Dravid was a happy man as he gave Hodge a tight hug in appreciation. “Rahul was delighted when I walked back to the dug-out. It has been an emotional week for us, an emotional week at the bench and it is a really good result for Rajasthan Royals and especially for Rahul Dravid,” expressed Hodge. The win did not come easy for the Royals. They lost half their side under sixty runs chasing 133 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad who have fancied themselves, defending low totals in the tournament. Hodge accepted that his side was under pressure when they lost the plot midway. “The wicket was a fraction slow that suited the type of cricket SRH have been playing through the tournament. We wanted to try and be aggressive early on in the innings. We got a decent start but faltered mid-way. It did not go according to the script, but I am glad we got there in the end.” The Royals lost wickets at regular intervals and also the ploy of throwing the youngsters to difficult situations almost backfired with the likes of Dishant Yagnik, Sanju Viswanad and Stuart Binny all going back without any notable contributions. Hodge was just happy they could get over the line at the end of it. “We were slightly under pressure while chasing the stiff target. We found ourselves in a bit of a hole and needed a few shots to come off well to get the asking rate down. Thankfully, we got a couple of shots in the stands which helped us get over the line.” Rajasthan Royals now face Mumbai Indians in their next fixture and a win would get them one step closer to the final. “Everyone wants to play in the final and it is satisfying to see that you are just a step away from the final. We have had a great season this year and have been one of the top teams in the competition and it was only fitting that we got a chance to play and get closer to grabbing the trophy,” Hodge said. Indians by 50 runs: Kings XI Punjab defeated Mumbai Indians by 50 runs in the T20 league match in Dharamsala on Saturday. Earlier, Azhar Mahmood and Shaun Marsh smashed a half century each and rescued Kings XI Punjab from a disastrous start to post 183 for eight. Already out of contention for a play-off berth, Punjab played freely with Marsh (63) and Mahmood (80) punishing the errant Mumbai bowlers with a slew of fours and sixes after being put in to bat at the picturesque HPCA stadium. Mahmood struck eight fours and four sixes in his 44-ball knock while Marsh hit 11 fours during his 47-ball innings. The duo rescued the Punjab side with a 148-run third wicket stand in 14.2 overs after the hosts were reduced to six for two in the third over. Mahmood was the more aggressive of the duo who scored more than 10 runs an over. Manan Vohra chipped in with an eight-ball cameo of 20 not out towards the end. For Mumbai, Lasith Malinga grabbed three wickets for 39 runs while Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rishi Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh and Kieron Pollard took a wicket apiece. Punjab had the worst possible start with openers Mandeep Singh (1) and Adam Gilchrist (5) back in the dressing room by the third over with just six runs on board. Mandeep misread a Dhawan delivery which pitched outside off and ended up spooning it straight to Pollard at mid-off in the second over. Playing in his last T20 league match, Gilchrist failed to make a mark as he was out in the third over, clean-bowled by Coulter-Nile. Brief Scores: Kings XI Punjab: 183 for eight in 20 overs (Azhar Mahmood 80, Shaun Marsh 63; Lasith Malinga 3/39). Mumbai Indians: 133 all out in 19.1 overs (Ambati Rayudu 26, Rohit Sharma 25; Azhar Mahmood2/24). Source: Image, Article, I hang my head in shame: Sports Minister Jitendra Singh today said he has been forced to hang his head in shame due to the IPL spot-fixing scandal, which is becoming bigger and murkier with each passing day, insisting that a deterrent law could have prevented the credibility crisis that cricket is facing right now. "It is very shameful. As a young person, as a sports fan, as the Sports Minister of the country, my head hangs in shame today," Jitendra told reporters. "There should be some mechanism so that it doesn't happen again. And it is not only about cricket. We are talking about cricket because of this expose but there are other sports as well," he said. The Law Ministry is mulling a new anti-fixing legislation to deal with the menace after the latest scandal in which three Rajasthan Royals cricketers were arrested. In fact, several other murky details of the betting racket are tumbling out everyday with police conducting country-wide raids to nab bookmakers, who have underworld connections. "We are in touch with the Home Ministry and the Law Ministry to work out the law. We will consult the Attorney General before moving forward," said Jitendra. "It is necessary that there is a law or a deterrent. There is no guarantee that this is not happening in other sports. Who knows it might have started in other sports as well," he cautioned. The Minister refused to comment on the links emerging between bookies and IPL team owners such as Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Mayappan. "That's an investigation, I can't say anything on that," he said. When asked if the government should have come up with a an anti-fixing law when the first such cricketing scandal broke out in 2000, Jitendra said, "What has happened in the past, I can't comment on that but the government today is very proactive." "There should have been a law earlier but better late than never," he added. Rajasthan Royals have achieved the 142-run target at the loss of five wickets with 17 balls to spare against Chennai Super Kings. This pitch had a lot of help for the bowlers in the first six overs. Holder and Mohit Sharma troubled the top order with accurate seam bowling. Dravid held firm as wickets tumbled at the other end. When he departed with the score reading 45/4, it seemed that Rajasthan would succumb to a heavy defeat. However, Watson and Binny engaged in some ferocious hitting that changed the course of the match. Both these batsmen latched onto Ashwin as they slammed him for 23 runs. From that point in time, the Chennai bowlers lost their lengths as Watson tore into the attack. Their 93 run partnership gobbled up only 45 balls and it sealed a fantastic win for Rajasthan. to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore to a four-run victory over the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Friday. Kohli struck a 58-ball 99 to take the visitors to a challenging 183/4 after being put into bat against which Daredevils displayed a spirited performance to end at 179/7 in 20 overs. Kohli’s magnificent innings included 10 boundaries and four huge sixes as he hammered the Daredevils bowlers all around the ground. The 24-year-old got run-out on the last ball of the innings looking for his first Twenty20 century. After losing destructive opener Chris Gayle (4) and Cheteshwar Pujara (17) by the fifth over, Australia’s Moises Henriques (26) and Kohli struck an important 57-run partnership to stabilise Bangalore’s innings. Daredevils’ stand-in skipper David Warner introduced spin with Shahbaz Nadeem who slowed down the visitors with Henriques’ wicket. But in came A.B. de Villiers, who along with Kohli, changed the course of the match by hammering 32 off 17 balls including two fours and two sixes. The South African fooled the bowlers by walking across the wicket and aiming for shots behind the stumps which fetched the Royal Challengers several runs in the death overs. Kohli and de Villiers just destroyed the Delhi bowlers in the four overs which went for an incredible 77 runs propelling them to a challenging total. The Delhi crowd loved the hammering so much that they started chanting RCB instead of their home team’s name. Umesh Yadav’s last two overs went for 47 runs, making him finish his quota of four overs with forgettable figures of none for 65. Irfan Pathan, Shahbaz Nadeem and Siddharth Kaul took a wicket each. It was indeed Kohli’s night out, who first edged one to Mornie Morkel but was declared not out because of a no ball when he was on duck. Then Virender Sehwag dropped him at short mid-wicket to give the Delhi-boy another lease of life. In reply, the displayed a determined performance, falling just four runs short in the end. With this loss, Delhi recorded their third consecutive defeat and 10th of the tournament. The Daredevils started well but had lost their big three - Mahela Jayawardene (19), Virender Sehwag (18) and Warner (4) - by the seventh over which put the brakes. However, Unmukt Chand (41) and Ben Rohrer (32) tried to steady their ship by putting together 58 runs for the fourth wicket. However, Rohrer’s wicket led to a mini collapse as the hosts lost three wickets in a span of 13 runs. Pathan (23 not out) and Morkel (19) gave a last try at the end to take the hosts home but left arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat denied them that. Unadkat was the pick of the bowlers giving away only 25 runs and taking five wickets from his four overs. He picked up Jayawardene, Sehwag, Chand, Kedar Jadhav (8) and Morne Morkel. of your own medicine. That's what I realised in the match against the Kings XI Punjab when David Miller capped off an amazing knock by dispatching me for a six to win the game for his team. In a way, I could emphatise with a lot of bowlers as I was left saying to myself 'so that's what it feels like to be on the receiving end of a hammering'. Tough and bitter as it was for me and my teammates to swallow that defeat, it was a very special innings from a player in very good form. It was almost like looking in a mirror to be honest, the way Miller kept taking his chances and the manner in which he was striking the ball. A painful lesson, but hey that's cricket! Dangerous lot: I'm well placed to know the dangers left-handers pose and after Miller, we were close to experiencing some more agony against the Delhi Daredevils the other night thanks to a couple of more southpaws in Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel. Thankfully, we were able to pull through this time and come away with a crucial win which keeps us in the top four. Another tough game awaits us today against the Kolkata Knight Riders and considering our current trouble with left-handers, we will need to tackle Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan with caution. With the ball, Sunil Narine is clearly our biggest threat and it will be important to adopt the same approach against him to the one we used in Bangalore. Much has been made of sharing so-called 'secrets' about your national team colleagues with your franchise team, especially with the rise of T20 leagues. No secrets: Be it Narine or any other player, in this day and age with the use of video analysis and other technology as well as with the volume of cricket played, there are hardly any secrets. Of course, as we all are competitive cricketers trying to win, I don't see any issues in sharing information about a familiar player if it can give your team a slender advantage. KKR, claim second spot: Mumbai Indians moved to second place, all but ending Kolkata Knight Riders' dreams of qualifying for the playoffs, after an emphatic 65-run win in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Wankhede Stadium here on Tuesday. Mumbai bowled out the Knight Riders for a meagre total of 105 in 18.2 overs after electing to bat and scoring 170 for six. They collected all two points and moved within just two points of league leaders Chennai Super Kings, who are on 18 points. Harbhajan Singh produced his best performance this season picking up three wickets while Pragyan Ojha and Mitchell Johnson chipping in with two apiece. Johnson again made the early inroads for Mumbai, castling Gautam Gambhir (0) in the fourth ball of the chase. Johnson was unlucky not to pick up another wicket in his next over with Harbhajan dropping Manvinder Bisla (17) in the slips. Bisla, though, failed to take advantage and fell soon enough to Ojha. Yusuf Pathan (13) came in and tonked the ball for a six and a four but tried one too many shots and became Ojha's second victim. Kolkata, then, kept losing wickets at regular intervals with the last five wickets falling for just 28 runs. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar (48) got Mumbai off to a blistering start smacking Ryan McLaren for five consecutive fours. Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith (47) added 93 runs for the first wicket and it seemed that Mumbai would post a massive score. However, after Tendulkar's fell Mumbai lost the next five wickets in no time adding just 51 runs to the total. Mumbai scored 35 off the last two overs with Dinesh Karthik (34 off 18 balls) playing a crucial cameo in the end. Source: Image, Source: News-Bullet, No fear of IPL, cricket cinema can co-exist: Mumbai, Thanks to the success of last year releases "Housefull 2" and "Vicky Donor" and David Dhawan's latest "Chashme Baddoor", the fear of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is vanishing from the minds of filmmakers who have begun to feel that cricket and cinema can co-exist. "Chashme Baddoor", a remake of 1981 Sai Paranjpye directed buddy film, has set the pace for the coming weeks. Said trade expert Komal Nahata: "'Chashme Baddoor' is this year's assurance to a nervous-as-hell industry. The IPL is like a monster and the film industry needs to be assured against every year. Fears were quashed last year when 'Housefull 2' proved a hit right in the middle of the IPL." Trade pundit Taran Adarsh said: "IPL is no longer a threat to a good film. If the content is strong, a film can withstand any opposition." The change has been there for quite some time. Producer Ram Mirchandani said last year during the IPL "Housefull 2" did Rs.110 crore business and "Vicky Donor" earned Rs.48 crore. "During another IPL season 'Chalo Dilli' had done fabulous business. I think the IPL ceased to be a threat to cinema after the first two years of its existence. They can comfortably co-exist," he added. Distributor and trade pundit Suniel Wadhwa says if the content is good, a film can work any time of the year. "Since 'Jannat' in 2008, the IPL has ceased to affect the film business provided the content is good. Films would do badly irrespective of the IPL if the content is bad. A recent case in point is Himmatwala," said Wadhwa. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, whose high-octane action film "Commando" released Friday, is confident that cricket and cinema can co-exist. "I was confident that the IPL cannot break a film if it has the potential to draw in the audience. In Europe, movies do well even during the European League Football. The only sporting event that is a threat to the movies is the Soccer World Cup. "And with due respect, the IPL does not generate the same fan frenzy as the Cricket World Cup, let alone the European League Football or the Soccer World Cup," said Shah. Shah feels the IPL incites more provincial passion than a nationwide frenzy. "Attendance in cinemas may suffer somewhat in the specific city where the IPL is played. But nothing more. The IPL is not like the Cricket World Cup. I had released my 'Namaste London' during the World Cup. And it is my biggest hit." However, he admits that the success of "Chashme Baddoor" augurs well for the box office in the coming weeks. "Any success is a good sign. That 'Chashme Baddoor' was the first film to successfully take on the IPL season just goes to prove that there is room for cricket and cinema in the Indian citizens' life. Give them an entertaining film and they'll tear themselves away from the game long enough to enjoy a film," he said. Sunrisers had made 159 for six in 20 overs after Shikhar Dhawan, playing his first match of the season, struck a valiant unbeaten 63. With the win, Super Kings consolidated their second place on account of better run-rate. Super Kings remained at second with 12 points Sunrisers remained at the third place with 10 points. Super Kings started their chase on a strong note with Mike Hussey (45) and Murali Vijay (18) adding 65 runs for the first wicket. At a time when it looked that the openers were settled, Vijay stepped down the track to hit leggie Amit Mishra (3/26) but missed the line and was stumped by Quinton de Kock. Mishra also picked up Hussey in the next over caught behind. Hussey was in good touch and hit five fours and two sixes in his 25-ball knock but he was unlucky to get out. He tried to sweep Mishra but he missed it and hit his pad and struck the back of his bat and lobbed to the keeper. Suresh Raina (16) also got a good start but failed to carry it forward as he holed out to Darren Sammy at long-off and became Mishra's third wicket. While Mishra, picked up the top-order, the most impressive Sunrisers bowler was 25-year-old leggie Karan Sharma, who have away just eight runs from his four overs. It was a maiden 16th over from Karan that raised hopes for Sunrisers as Super Kings needed 46 runs off 24 balls. But in the next over Dhoni, who was dropped by Mishra when he was yet to open his account, smashed Dale Steyn for two sixes and brought down the equation to 32 from 18. Dhoni again came down hard on Steyn hitting the South African for a four and six as 13 runs came of the penultimate over. In Pic: Shikhar Dhawan, playing his first match of the season, struck a valiant unbeaten 63. PIC: BCCI.It was a tough day for Steyn as he gave away 45 runs in his four overs, with 27 coming from his last two. Super Kings needed 15 runs off the last over and after a first-ball wide, Dhoni smashed the young Ashish Reddy for a six and two fours to finish off the innings. Earlier, Dhawan hit a gritty 63 while Ashish Reddy made a quick-fire 36 off 16 as Sunrisers Hyderabad made a fighting 159 for six. Dhawan hit 10 fours during his 45-ball knock. It was a brave innings by Dhawan, who was retired hurt when he was hit on his lower abdomen by Bravo's short-pitched delivery in the 14th over. But seeing the team in trouble, he came out to bat and took Hyderabad to a competitive total on board. Source: Image, Article. It is a good sign that our batting has started to click at this crucial juncture of the tournament," said Bisla who scored a match winning 51. He conceded that the Knights did not play well in the last few matches which has now put their title defence under jeopardy. "We did not play well. So we lost the last three matches. But as a team we are good to defeat any team, and hope to turn things around," added Bisla. against Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League here on Monday. Sharma continued with his rich form in the tournament, plundering 79 off 39 balls in Mumbai's 174 for three. The strong looking bowling line-up then did enough to limit Punjab to 170 all out as the match was decided on the final ball. David Miller's 56 went in vain while Harbhajan Singh (3/14) was the stand out bowler for Mumbai. Punjab kept on with the asking rate in the first 10 overs but loss of five wickets for 79 hurt them bad. The rebuilding job was now with Miller and Azhar Mahmood. But Harbhajan removed the former Pakistan all-rounder and Gurkeerat Singh in the same over to further dent visitors' hopes, leaving them at 111 for seven in 14 overs. The South African played a blinder to keep his team in the hunt till the end but his dismissal in the 18th over tilted the match towards Mumbai. The game still went into the final over with Punjab needing 17 off it. Dhawal Kulkarni kept his nerves to restrict Praveen Kumar, whose 24-run cameo kept the home crowd on the edge of their seats. The win pushed Mumbai to fourth spot in the points table with six wins from nine games. Punjab are sixth in the standings having lost five of their nine matches. Earlier, Sharma led from the front to propel Mumbai beyond 170, a total which seemed improbable when they were 88 for three in the 13th over. Dwayne Smith (33) scored runs at the top and when he was caught in the deep off Piyush Chawla, Sharma took centrestage. Such was his dominance of the Punjab bowlers, the destructive Kieron Pollard at the other end was forced to play second fiddle. Sharma scored 63 of their 88-run stand as 72 runs coming off the last five overs. The most lucrative over of the innings was the last one when Sharma clobbered Punjab's stand-in skipper David Hussey for three sixes and two fours. Sharma's sublime effort was his fourth 50 plus score in the competition. Pollard remained unbeaten on 20. Source: Image, Article, Crowd forgot that I play for India also: Virat Kohli, Press Trust of India, Mumbai: Furious after being booed by the crowd, Royal
Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli said IPL fans tend to forget that he competes for India as well and their jeering can end up creating "hatred among the players". Kohli was booed by fans at the Wankhede Stadium after a controversial run-out incident during RCB's match against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday. Kohli was jeered several times after he appealed for a run-out involving Mumbai Indians batsman Ambati Rayudu, who was dismissed in a bizarre manner. Rayudu seemed to have grounded his bat before it went in the air when he collided with bowler Vinay Kumar. It was at this time that a direct hit from Kohli hit the stumps. The visitors asked for the third umpire's decision, which went in their favour. This agitated the crowd and they booed Kohli calling him a "cheat". The 24-year-old continued to face the crowd's ire when he came onto bat and even during the post-match presentation. "As far as the crowd is concerned, it has happened to a few players in the past as well. I don't know why they get so worked up during IPL. IPL is not the end of the world. And they forget that the players they are booing for also play for their country," a livid Kohli said after the match. "It is only creating hatred among the players. When I come back and play for India, they are going to cheer for me. It doesn't work that way. You come to Bangalore and you see how Indian players are appreciated," he added. Kohli said he could not understand the crowd behaviour at the Wankhede. "...I don't know what is wrong with people in this venue. It feels a bit weird because at the end of the day you play for India and you don't come here to be hated. Whoever wins or loses, in any of the games, you come to Bangalore, every captain is cheered, every Indian player is cheered. "People appreciate good cricket. I don't know why people have so much aggression and so much hatred towards other teams in this particular venue. As I said, IPL is not the end of the world," Kohli said in the post-match media conference. On the run-out incident, Kohli explained, "Well, it is very important to have knowledge of cricket. If it was any intentional interruption from the bowler then the umpire would have stopped the batsman. "It is his job not mine. The umpire told me it was there. The bowler didn't see the batsman and the batsman didn't see the bowler, and they collided. It was perfectly fine to be honest," he said. "You should have that much cricket awareness to see where the bowler is coming back to his mark. He has to back up when there is no one behind him." Mumbai Indians player Dwayne Smith refused to get drawn into the debate and merely said, "It was a case of fair play but you can't do anything about it. They decided to go against it." Source: Image, Article, Kohli reminds me of myself: Viv Richards: New Delhi: Virat Kohli on Thursday received the biggest compliment of his cricket career with West Indies batting legend Sir Vivian Richards saying the talented Indian batsman reminds him of his own batting. "I love watching Virat Kohli bat. He looks to me like an individual of my own heart. I love his aggression and serious passion that I used to have. He reminds me of myself," Richards said. "He is an individual who doesn't back off from confrontation. Someone who can stand his ground under pressure. I love that as you can't teach these instinctive aspects," Richards told PTI in an exclusive

interview on Thursday. The 61-year-old Richards, regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the game's history, said that even while fielding, Kohli is a lot like him. "Just like me, he loves the ball to come to him. He wants to dive, stop the runs. He is a livewire unlike some fielders, who would just dig a hole and dive in it rather than dive to stop the ball!" he said. Asked whether Kohli will be the 'flag bearer' of Indian batting once Sachin Tendulkar retired, Richards sounded positive. "I believe till the Master of Shaolin (Tendulkar) is there, you need to give him respect. Obviously, once Sachin retires, you can bank on Kohli as he is young enough and has a lot of time on his side. He will only improve and continue to get better," he explained. While Richards is a great fan of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's cool approach, he did not forget to mention that the Indian team needs to win on overseas soil regularly. "What a way to come back against the Aussies (in the recent Test series at home). But for me, the determining factor of how good you are is when you win anywhere. You don't have to wait until you play at home to beat your opponent. "I agree that it's vital to defend home turf but it's crucial to win outside," Richards said, making no bones about what he felt about Team India's recent performances. "For me, it used to give me immense pride to perform away from home. Look at Steve Waugh's team or Ricky Ponting's team till a certain point of time. They were great teams because they won in all conditions. That I believe was the essence of 'Fire in Babylon'(Documentary on West Indies cricket)." 'King Richards' was also forthright in pointing out that India's away Test series in South Africa at the end of the year would be a tough assignment. "It's going to be tough. South Africa are the best Test nation in the world at the moment with the most successful and aggressive bowling attack (Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander). You saw what happened to Pakistan a few months back. It will be the ultimate test," he said. "But Dhoni is one of the coolest individual and I liked the way he got his job done during the recent Australia series. But having won 4-0, people may expect more in South Africa, which is a huge ask. But if they can collectively work together, they can keep hopes alive," he said. Asked what would have been his auction price had he been playing in the IPL era, Richards jokingly said "may be one Pound!" Source: News Bullet, Image, IPL: Cheerleading the Gangnam style, Fans

the ongoing IPL, 'Twitter', one of the most popular social networking sites, has become an off-the-field war zone for IPL fans. Termed as 'Twitter Battle' the online poll based on questions about the teams, is a rage among the twitterati. To start off, Twitter comes up with the Team HashTag Battle, where there are 'hashtags' for both teams, (e.g. #RCB, #MI) on the live 'Match Centre'. Supporters have a chance to show their support by hashtagging their favourite teams and keeping it ahead in terms of popularity and make it a poll winner. "I always vote for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Twitter online poll," a student and a KKR supporter, Proteek Banerjee, told IANS. Then there is the 'Live Tweet Counter' which keeps count of the tweets that have any relation with the IPL matches. Lastly, there's a 'Loyalty Corner', where the fans and supporters can show their support for a team, by selecting their team, and then by hitting the 'TWEET' button. On the IPL website, Twitter features the Tweet Counter and Team Hashtag battle. These have also been included into the television medium, to heighten the frenzy. These features will be shown in TV during the live telecast of the matches. Tweets from fans and celebrities have been pouring in from all over the world, with commentators reading out the best of them during the matches. "To all my twitter family I hope everyone have a good day. Am home waiting for the IPL cricket to start," tweeted Yohan Blake, the famous Jamaican sprinter on the day the league started. Miller's ton steals an unlikely
win Punjab, Mohali: Riding on David Miller's third fastest century in the IPL, Kings XI Punjab clinched a six-wicket win against Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling high-scoring chase at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium here on Monday. Chasing a stiff target of 191, Miller (101 not out of 38 balls) walked in when Kings XI were struggling at 64 for four in the 10th over. Miller and Rajagopal Satish (18-ball 27) then stole away the match with their 130-run stand for unfinished fifth wicket stand in 49 deliveries as Kings XI scored 194 for four with 12 balls to spare. Royal Challengers skipper Virat Kohli must be cursing himself for the loss as he dropped a sitter when Miller was batting on 41. In the next over, there was more frustration for Kohli as Miller smashed Rudra Pratap Singh for two sixes and four fours as 26 runs came off the 15th over and swung the match in favour of the home team, who jumped from 112/4 to 138/4 in just six balls. There was no stopping Miller, who in the next two overs smashed pacers Ravi Rampaul and Vinay Kumar for two sixes and two fours to take Kings XI to 172 for four after the 17th over. The match was almost in the grasp of Kings XI as they needed 18 runs off the last three overs. Hoping for some luck, Kohli introduced Chris Gayle, who this time got a taste of his own medicine and was spanked for 22 runs as Kings XI ran away with an unlikely win. Gayle's first three balls went for 15 runs by Satish and Miller got the winning runs and also his century in style by smashing the last ball for a huge six. Miller struck eight fours and seven sixes during his knock and was also adjudged as Man of the Match. In the last five overs, Royal Challengers bowlers gave away 99 runs and gifted away the match that was well in their grasp till the 11th over when Kings XI were 79 for four after the top order collapsed. The only bowler, who got some respect from Miller was left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, who gave away 24 runs for his two wickets from three overs. Earlier, a 102-run stand between Gayle (61) and Cheteshwar Pujara (51) helped Royal Challengers pile a competitive total of 190 for three from 20 overs. Kings XI pacer Manpreet Gony got two wickets but was expensive as he conceded 41 runs from his four overs. The duo started off cautiously slowly as 23 runs came off the first four overs. The floodgates opened in the fifth over with the introduction of lesser known South African-born Australian pacer Michael Nesser, who has just played six first class matches for Queensland. Pujara struck the 23-year-old for a four over the covers and Gayle wrapped up the over clobbering him for two sweetly timed sixes as 18 runs came off the fifth over. Runs came thick and fast and 96 was up in the 11th over. Gayle got to his fifty in 27 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. It looked Gayle will go onto score a massive one as he flicked Gony for a six to bring up the century run stand. The burly Jamaican, however, fell in the next ball trying to play accross the line and was castled by Gony. Kohli (14) started off well hitting Gony for a four in the same over as Bangalore reached 108/1 after 12 overs. Pujara became Gony's second victim as he danced down the track to swipe him acros the line, but dragged the length ball onto his stumps. Pujara hit eight fours in his 48 ball stay. Awana picked up Kohli in the next over with Marsh taking a good catch over his shoulder while running backwards. With Bangalore at 144/3, AB de Villiers and Moises Henriques came up with an unbeaten stand of 46 runs in just 19 balls. De Villiers struck a 19-ball 38 assisted with four fours and two sixes while Henriques two fours and a six during his 7-ball 16. They finished off in style by smashing Nesser for 21 runs of the last over and the Queenslander finished with 62 runs from four overs. Source: Image, Article, IPL now a hair

Kolkata Knight Riders' Caribbean spinner Sunil Narine has not only tormented the batsmen with the ball, his 'mohawk' has also caught the attention of the fans. Batting great Sachin Tendulkar, turning out for the Mumbai Indians, has a new spike, while Royal Challengers' hard-hitting Jamaican batsman Chris Gayle's unique dreadlocks are all becoming the talk of the style freaks. (Also Read: Parvez Rasool Interview about his IPL Debut) According to a report in the Indian Express, the Pune Warriors' player has removed the logo of a liquor brand - an IPL sponsor - from his team jersey. The bowler who debuted for Pune earlier this week and called it the "proudest day of his life," has reportedly informed the team management of his decision to not sport the logo as "it hurts his religious sentiments." The 24-year-old said he initially did not realize that the logo belonged to an alcohol brand. When he did, he took 'immediate action.' "I used tape to hide the logo and people were initially wondering why I was doing this. I told them that it is because my religion prohibits alcohol consumption. I can't endorse liquor brand. For me my belief is paramount. My family is happy with the decision," he said. This is not the first such instance of a cricketer refusing to promote an alcohol brand in any way. Amla had refused to play till the team's official sponsor was removed from his jersey. This was because the company was a well-known beer brand. India's top off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was also in trouble for letting his hair down and endorsing a liquor brand.
