magazine has listed the world’s 100 most influential style superstars in anticipation of its annual poll.While child actors-turned-designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the First Lady and the ‘monster mother’ Lady Gaga made it to the list, many big-names and fashion pioneers failed to feature, the Daily Mail reported. Divided into categories, the list is fairly exhaustive and includes designers and brands, models, muses, photographers and editors and stylists, whose careers stretch back to 1923 when Time launched. Still, as with any list-making endeavour, there were bound to be oversights. The 25-year-old Olsen duo join iconic creators such as Miuccia Prada, Coco Chanel and Christian Dior on the Designers and Brands list, which seems a strange choice when many prominent and highly influential succeeding designers, save for John Galliano, and Karl Lagerfeld, were clearly missing. Raf Simons, Christopher Bailey and Hedi Slimane, who is credited for bringing skinny jeans to the mainstream, were all left off the list, which doesn’t include any notable retailers either, such as Andrew Saks and Ikram Goldman. However a few head-turners made the cut, such as Sarah Blakely, the inventor of Spanx, who Time said “has helped shape the modern woman – literally”. Jacques Heim and Louis Reard, the men who invented the two piece swimsuit, which eventually became the bikini, also featured. On the list of Editors and Stylists, others may wonder where the more mainstream visionaries are who have made an impact, like Rachel Zoe. While more predictable mentions were included, such as Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, renowned fashion critics Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes were both left out. This is mostly noteworthy for the fact that Robin Gavensen, however, was mentioned. western wear: Gone are the days when women’s wear in India was restricted to ethnic outfits like a sari or salwar kameez. With changing mindsets and more number of women joining the corporate world, now, western wear is dominating shop shelves not only in metros but also in small towns. There has been a complete shift in the women’s wear category. For instance, the dress has become the new tunic. Be it a fitted sheath for a formal occasion or an evening satin dress or a summer dress, the tunic finds acceptability in the hugely dynamic Indian market. From 2009 onwards, there has been a huge jump in demand for women’s western wear. According to Technopak Advisors, women’s western wear is clocking around 18 per cent growth as against 9 to 10 per cent for ethnic wear. Although the Rs 65,000 crores women’s wear market is dominated by traditional clothing like saris and salwar kameez, western wear apparel, which includes trousers, skirts and formals is increasing rapidly. At present, top Indian brands like Allen Solly, Scullers and Van Heusen are active in this space. For them women’s western wear is an extension from their men's line. However, there are brands like Madame, who offer women’s western wear through their EBOs. Madame, for example, has the usual denim and capris, in addition to a range of pleated and flared skirts, collared shirts, cotton day dresses and formal ensembles. College girls can choose from razor backs, tank tops and noodle-strapped camisoles. Buoyed by the growth in this segment, Madame plans to have 150 exclusive stores by 2012. Van Heusen Woman is betting big on dresses, which became the fourth largest category in the previous fiscal and continues to grow at an exponential rate. By fiscal year 2012, it is slated to become the dress destination in the country by selling the highest number of dresses by a homegrown western fashion formal brand. Going by the changing dressing styles Arun Sirdeshmukh, chief executive, Reliance Trends says there is a shift to western attire. There are sections of women consumers who wear western clothes 4 to 5 times a week, while others like to wear them 2 to 3 times a week. Reliance Trends has a balanced mix of western and ethnic wear in the ratio 50:50. In jobs where client interaction is high, formal urban wear has become an absolute necessity. More money in the hands of the urban working woman has also enhanced her purchasing power. Indian women today are more exposed to western ideas hence, the rise in demand for formal western clothes like shirts, trousers and formal dresses. Moreover, women employees today are realizing the benefits of western wear. These clothes offer more flexibility and comfort. No wonder, brands like Zara, Mango and Esprit are increasing their presence in the India. This is also helping in pushing up awareness about western wear in the country. Fusion wear has also risen in popularity in Tier II-III cities. Combining traditional ethnic tops like kurtis and short kurtis with jeans and other western bottoms has also propelled the retail growth of women’s western wear. Meanwhile Pantaloon Retail has been witnessing a shift to western wear in smaller towns as well. Kailash Bhatia, Chief Executive (Fashion), Pantaloon Retail believes the reason for the shift is more awareness about international trends. Nearly 50 per cent of its women wear shelves are stocked with western wear now. Bollywood star and India's first Miss Universe Sushmita Sen is all set to add glamour to Leicester when she comes to support diabetes charity Silver Star. The 36-year-old actress has been invited by the charity's founder-patron Leicester East MP Keith Vaz who was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago. In a whirlwind visit, Sushmita will launch Vaz's anniversary appeal for Silver Star, which will mark his twenty five years as the Member of Parliament for Leicester East. The appeal is designed to raise funds for further mobile diabetes testing units in Mumbai and the Midlands. So far Silver Star units have tested 25,000 people in schools, communities, businesses and villages for free, resulting in diabetes caught early and many lives and limbs saved. Sushmita's visit will culminate in the hotly-anticipated launch of Silver Star's raffle prize, a new Kia Picanto at the Sandicliff Kia's Red Cube dealership in Leicester. For just £1 pound, participants will have the chance to take delivery of the £8,000 car in October this year. The unique car will be signed by Sushmita and Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan when he visits the city in June. “I am delighted to be marking my 25 years as Leicester East's representative in Parliament with an appeal for this extremely important cause. Sushmita is the first of a number of special guests who will be visiting Leicester to support the appeal,” said Keith. “If only I was aware of what could be done with diet and exercise to prevent diabetes, I might never have developed it. With 850,000 people in the UK living with undiagnosed diabetes, Silver Star's work is vital,” Keith added. Sushmita will also launch the inaugural Silver Star Fun Run. The fun run will take place on July 25 and will raise awareness of the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle in preventing obesity and linked conditions such as diabetes.
