INDIAN BADMINTON LEAGUE – A HUGE SUCCESS: Just concluded Indian Badminton League was a huge success in all manner. Crowd was present in all ties, cheering for home team. There was lot of money involved in the league. The Hyderabad team earned about $500,000 for the victory, while Lucknow received around $200,000. “The IBL is a game-changer as far as Indian badminton is concerned,” said former India international and commentator Sanjay Sharma. “It gave a platform for our juniors to rub shoulders and learn from world stars. “Players earned serious money for a little over a fortnight’s work. Usually they get around $20,000 to $25,000 for winning a tournament. But in the IBL most players got more for just playing in it.” Each team, comprising four foreign players, six Indians and one upcoming Indian junior, played in a double-leg preliminary round, with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals. All ties consisted of five matches — two men’s singles, and one match each in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. To quicken the pace, the standard two-point gap to win a game was abandoned in favour of a race to 21 points for the first two games and 11 points for the decider, if needed. New format will make IBL more open: Delhi smashers: New Delhi: Star shuttlers of Krrish Delhi Smashers today gave a thumbs up to the new scoring system for the USD one million Indian Badminton League (IBL) with their star icon Jwala Gutta saying it will make the game faster and more aggressive.The 29-year-old from Hyderabadi believes the new format in the IBL will make it an exciting tournament, throwing up some interesting results. "The format is different and anybody can win in this format and we have a good team. We played the format today at the practice. The shorter the game, the faster it becomes. It is going to be more aggressive and fast badminton," said the
 Commonwealth Games gold medallist. "Even it is Lee Chong Wei, we can pull it off in this format. Even if one is 7-0, one can turn the tables. The game can change. Of course it can go against us also, so it is going to be tricky," Jwala added. According to the new scoring system, there will be two breaks of 60 seconds at 7 and 14 points respectively in each of the first two games and if the match is pushed to the decider, then there will be a break after the sixth point. Moreover, while the first two games will be a race to the 21 points, without the standard two-point gap, the player who reaches 11 points first in the decider will emerge as winner of the match. Sai Praneeth, who had spoilt legendary shuttler Taufik Hidayat's farewell at the Indonesia Super Series and also stunned then world number four Yun Hu of Hong Kong in the Singapore Super Series, said the two-breaks in the new format can make the competition more open in the IBL. "It will be a level playing field in this format. We can expect to beat higher players. But strategising will be different and difficult. It will take a few games to understand that. In the 21-point decider, even if you are down you can make a comeback but in 11-point third game, you have to keep attacking. You don't have time to think much," said the world number 37 Indian. H S Prannoy, another men's singles player, also felt the new format will act as an advantage for the Indian players and they can hope to beat top players such as Lee Chong Wei. "Players such as Tien Minh Nguyen used to play long matches. It is more rallies. These players don't have much strokes, it is more fitness," he said. "Even with Lee Chong Wei we will have an advantage in this 11-point format. With Lee you can't play the whole match at his pace, but in this format, you can have a better chance by going full out in the 11-point third game," Prannoy said. Source: Article, Playing rules tweaked for Indian Badminton League: New Delhi, July 21 (IANS) The rules of the upcoming Indian Badminton League (IBL) have been tweaked to make the game more competitive and attractive for the spectators. Unlike international rules, where the victor needs a two-point gap to win the match, in IBL the player who first reaches 21 points in the first two games will win the match, irrespective if the opponent is on 20 points. But if the match goes into the third and deciding game, it will be an 11-point game instead of 21. Here too, the winner will not need a two-point gap to triumph. Also, there will be two one-minute breaks in the first two games when either shuttler reaches the 7-point mark and the 14-point mark first. In the third game, there will be a 60-second break when a player reaches the 6-point mark first. There will be an additional two-minute break between the games. "This is a new format and should be interesting. The slots will be used to show advertisements to generate revenue and the players will also get a break," a Badminton Association of India (BAI) official told IANS Sunday on condition of anonymity. To add to that, all the five matches in the tie will be played out during the group stages even if one team routs the other 3-0 in the first three matches. However, the same won't be the case in the knockouts, where the team to win the first three matches proceeds to the next round. Former national champion U. Vimal Kumar seemed excited about the new format. "It will be interesting. This could bring up a few surprises. You can see some small player topple a big name because the pauses could also break the momentum of any player," said the Olympian, who has been roped in as the coach of the Banga Beats. Delhi Smashers coach Rashid Sidek, of Malaysia, however, disagreed that the new rules will affect the game. "I don't think it will make much of a difference. All top players like Lee Chong Wei have the ability to stay focussed, otherwise they wouldn't be where they are. Surprises are a part of the game.
